Now that the Canon Triple rebate is in effect, I'm trying to look for a lens or set of lens that can go with a brand new Rebel XT. My budget is around $1000. Anyways, here's the combination I have so far. The prices in parens are the prices after rebates. Most prices I got from B&H. I shoot mainly landscape/city scape as well as people in parties. You'll notice that I try to overlap as less as possible.

Anyways, feel free to critique my options and give your own combination. The list is in no particular order.

Also, as a separate question, how is the EF 28-80mm F3.5-5.6 II as an everyday lens?

Another lens in the rebate form that I'm interested in is the EF 50 1.4 USM, but I don't know how to work that in to this combination.
Thanks for any feedback!

Noticed almost all of your options have no wide angle. 28mm isn't really wide. i think you'll need something wider, but the only thing that's cheap, wide, and performs (generally) well is the kit lens.

If you wanted to save the money, i'd go for option 6. But if not, I'd replace the 75-300 with the sigma 70-300 apo macro. better overall optics plus a 1:2 macro feature.

XT with kit 850 (775)
sigma 70-300 APO ~200

total: ~975

either choice will give you the wide-standard-tele focal needs.

The bad thing is aperture. these are SLOW... you need flash if going indoors. So maybe you can get your option 6 + a flash. it's funny how the rebate doesn't include the EX430 flash... but you can try the sigma 500 super (~200). so then the total's something like 1050?

I did notice that. So I think I'll be forced to use the kit lens as my everyday lens. The 1.6x multiplier really sucks, but oh well... thanks for the input.

this may stretch your budget by about 100$, but the rebel xt with the 17-85 IS kit may be a good choice for you considering your interest in cityscapes and party pics..

Option 6 plus DXO Optics, which will correct most of the problems with the cheap lenses, except of course for the max aperture.

The 17-85 IS is one sweet lens, and I am considering it.

The DxO Optics sounds like a good solution, so I'll download the trial version after getting my camera.

Thanks for your help...

Or the Tamron 28-75 XR DIlens is very cool for the Rebel XT.

Lens costs about $320 with rebates.

Sharp, contrasty, excellent build quality, useful zoom range.

I personally don't like to shoot with lenses slower than F2.8 at the wide endif I can at all avoid it.

Thanks Terry, I read (on another thread) about that lens, and the Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro DF. Both seems like an good everyday lens.
