The Canon TCs aren't compatible, of course, so I need to choose among the third-party units. I noticed some of them say that they're for lenses that are 90mm or greater, what happens if I use one of those (on a 350d) with the 85mm?
The Kenko Pro 300 3x is tempting, but I'd rather avoid attention-grabbing white.

I'm not sure what you are expecting from a telconverter. Generally, they are all pretty poor and will dramatically effect the quality of your image.

The 1.4x is about as high a magnification as I would use.

You will probably get a better image from a cheap zoom then using a 3x on any lens.

Take a look here http://www.eospix.com/content-20.htmlthere are some charts showing the effect of a 1.4x & 2x on a 300L lens. You will see what I mean.

TC's are generally not designed to work with lenses that are shorter than 200mm.
Also the Canon/Sigma matched TC's will physically not fit on the 85mm lens.
So you are stuck with using a generic TC, which degrades image quality even more.

I think the shortest lens that will work with a teleconverter is the 135 f2.0L

why would you want to put a TC on an 85 1.8.. if you need more range, get a 70-200 2.8 or a 135 2.0..
