Do most users of long lenses IE: 200 - 400 mm put a clear UV filter over the end and leave it on as a way to protect the big glass.

I don't know if length of the lens matters, really.

Pro's I know do not use filters for lens protection.

They just take care of their lenses.

I would suggest if you are in conditions where there is blowing dust or sand put the UV filter on, otherwise the lens hood should do a pretty good job of protecting your lens.
