I just got my 70-200 f/4 L today, and I was surprised what happened when I compared it to a Tamron 28-200 at 200mm. I expected the Canon to have better sharpness, color, contrast, and such. And it does. But what I wasn't expecting was a HUGE difference in field of view. I know that the focal length of a lens is determined when focused at infinity, and that it can vary between lenses focused at short distances, but I wasn't expecting a difference this great. The camera was on a tripod and didn't move between pictures.

The odd thing is, when I focus on a close object and then turn the focus toward infinity, the object grows larger (and OOF, of course) with the Tamron, and smaller with the Canon. I guess there's a lot I don't know about optics... Tomorrow, I hope to have the chance to take both lenses out and compare them at infinity.

The fruit seems to be less in focus on the Canon too.

There are usually some discrepancies in focal length between lens manufacturers, but that's huge.

I still haven't had the chance to compare them at infinity. When I've gone out with the L, I haven't wanted to take it off the camera.
