Just bought a rebel xt body only. Heard bad stuff about the kit lens.

Any ideas will help on some good lenses. Looking to shoot inside hockey rinks, low light. Don't want blurry pictures. looking to spend in the 500$ area. My old canon elan had a 75-300mm(sigma) but I think it was crap. Pictures came out blurry and dark. Help needed for a good lens for my new baby.

Thanks alot

Bill

Sadly you were misinformed and missed probably the best value-for-money lens Canon make.

For your hockey requirments in that price region there is only one choice possible I think, it will be closer to $800, but there's no point in spending $500 on something that won't give you decent results:

Sigma 70-200 f2.8 EX HSM

I have a sigma dl 75-300mm 1:4-5.6 and a 28-80mm ultrasonic canon lens. Film lenses. Are these any good. Thanks for you reply and help. I'm hearing alot about the 70-200 canon lens, with IO. Is this a good lens and how much does it go for.

Your existing lenses are OK.

Not great, but if you work within their limitations you can get some good stuff.

28-80 * 1.6 = 45-128mm Effective Focal Length, so you have lost your wideangle.

Which is why the kit lens is a good idea.

18-55 * 1.6 = 28-88mm which is very close to the field of view your 28-80 used to give you on your film camera.

And with a significantly better MTF too, seriously have a look around for a 2nd hand 18-55 there are loads of them about and you can probably pick one up really cheap.

The Canon 70-200 f2.8 L IS is an awesome lens and costs around $1700.

You can check out prices of just about everything at B&H online.

Hi Bill: I shoot my sons' swim meets and lighting there is abysmal. Don't discount the 85/1.8 primefrom Canon. It's low to moderate light characteristics are outstanding. I shoot 1/250 w/flash on my 20d and get good results. Even in the poor ambientlighting I'm running apertures of about 2.5-3.5. This gives me better results than my 24-70/2.8L under these conditions (pretty specific). I've also used the 70-200/4L but that's a bit too slow here. I've never been a fan of primes but this one, coupled with the relatively low price, has made it a favorite of mine. Your Rebel's 1.6 crop makes this a 136mm equivalent focal length. Not as good lengthwise as an x-200/2.8 zoom but not bad if you aren't very far up in the stands. It'd be nice if I could add a 1.4x teleconverter but that's the way it is. Just my opinion. gary

I think Peripatetic's recommendation of the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 would be right on, specially if you can't get rink side.

The lens is $789 at B&H.
