how do I tell just by looking online which is the usm lens as opposed to the standard one, All the pics Ive seen they look the same.

I don't think I've seen a picture ofthe USM version either, but be aware of this- the "USM" version is not equipped with the better Ring USM, but withthe micro USM- same thing on the 70-300 IS lens. To be honest, if you're going to buy the 18-55 lens, you are better off with the non-USM lens. The micro USM motor featureisn't worth the price difference and has a performance way inferior to the ring USM motor.A marketing game Canon plays with us.

At the front of the lens, where the name is printed, there should be a red "USM" printed at the end of the name

Thanks, not thinking of getting the usm having read about the fact that the optics are the same as the plain version.
