I went to the first round of A1 Grand Prix in the UK at Brands hatch and shot with a 300D and Sigma 70-300 F4-5.6

Got some good panning shots at speeds from 1/60 to 1/200.I was quite close to the action so used the wider end of the lens.

This shot was taken at F/18 1/80s 92mm at ISO 400.

My point being that it all depends on the distance from the subject.I cant see any point in panning from a distance as , you will be rotating the lens very little.

Try the Sigma 120-300 f/2.8EX ... It'll be the best $2000 you'll ever spent

I of course click on any topic where someone says, "Help me spend my money." :-)

Well, it's not NASCAR but it's similar - I shoot motorcycle racing with my 20D. My lens of choice for the track is Canon's EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM. This is at 1/1600, ISO 400, at 130. The lens has two stability modes - mode 2 is designed for "things moving in one direction quickly". Like cars and motorcycles. It's a really great lens. I like it because of the range of shots I can get with just the one lens - I don't have to change lens to get shots in the pits, then again to get the start, then again to get distance shots, then again to get the track marshall picking his nose, stuff like that.
