I can buy a NIB Sigma 120-300mm f/2.8 (suggested by NHL) for $1700. The same lens with the new DG coating is about $600 - $700 more. Surely a new coating for the glass 1) can't be all the expensive and 2) shouldn't have a 33% increase in photo quality (as in a 33% increase in price).

Or am I missing something here?

FYI - The DG also come witha bigger tripod collar which can double as a carrying handle... when swinged around!

The newer lensalso comes with a removeable strap which some folks might find it useful

->IMO I rather invest that $ difference in another fast aperture EX lens with HSM instead

For what it's worth, I bought the non-DG version (Sigma is making the DG version in small batches so it's hard to come by) and bought the larger tripod collar separately. So the total price tag was still less than the new DG and I got the better collar. One of the two came with a strap but I don't use it. I shoot sports and have the thing mounted on a monopod so the strap doesn't buy me much.
