I have a 20D along with the kit lens and a Tamron 28-75. I am thinking about buying the Sigma 70-200 or Sigma 100-300 along with a 1.4 TC. Would the Sigma TC be the best for this or would aKenko work equally as well. I am thinking about its use for any future lens purchases that may not be Sigma.

IQ is a priority so I would want the best match for the Sigma.

Thanks.

The Sigma (or Canon's) are matched TC, i.e. they are designed to 'match' only to certain lenses, which are mostly long lenses, and have more correcting elements in them. These types of TCs are of higher quality but thicker in construction, and because of this they will stick out more in the front beyond the lens mount which will bump into the back of lenses that are not designed for them.

Most generic TCs have less elements in them and tend to be thinner, which are flush to the lens mount up front and will work with almost any lenses. Some TCs also do not transmit the information from the lens to the camera but can be advantageous as well like 'fooling' the camera into autofocus outside of the camera operating limit for example... (i.e. slower than f/5.6)

So, NHL, that having been said, with the Sigma 120-300, which TC would you be using? The one by Sigma that is "matched" or the Kenko?

I have both the Sigma 1.4 and 2x TC - They stack onto one another and fit inside one of the included case...
I use the other Sigma's TC case for my Canon 50mm f/1.4 instead

Most folks use a camera bag - I opt for this bazooka instead for my outings: http://www.thinktankphoto.com/produc....php?image=BTC
-> I can stack a 150mm macro, a 12-24mm EX, the 100-400L and the two cased TCs and 50mm f/1.4 sandwiched in between the other 3 lenses all into one bag!

NHL, do you use the Sigma TC's with the 100-400 or do you have another TC for that lens, if you use a TC with it?

I can't use any of my TC on the 100-400L because that would make the lens lose autofocus since the combo will be slower than f/5.6:

I use the Sigma 2x on the 120-300 f/2.8 EX to get the reach of a 600mm instead:

-> You can opt for a Kenko on the 100-400L, but it would not do to well with actions though because of the hunting...
