I have been considering a long zoom so I have been watching this thread. Glad to see all the great input on the 100-400 lenses, however, has anyone considered the Tokina AT-X840 AF D (80-400). Its a new one and I don't think it has been released yet. Considering Tokina's recent successes with the AT-X124 it may be worth the wait. Hope to find a review of it somewhere soon.

I have shot many photos of competitive swimmers with the 100 - 400, 4.5-5.6 and have enjoyed this lenses a great deal.

Hi,

You have mentioned the Sigma and Canon lenses, How about the Tokina 80-400mm Lens. I would like to find someone that actually has one or has used it. The reviews are ok, But actual opinions are better.

I've been considering the Tokina 80-400. The reviews I've read were all favorable, except for the slow AF and the non-removable tripod mount. Tokina has just released a redesigned version with a removable collar and internal focusing, which they are saying is faster. How much faster? I haven't seen any reviews of the redesign, but it's still the same type of motor, not USM.

If you want USM then you are really limited to the Canon's or the few Sigma's only with HSM in this range: the 100-300 f/4 EX

-> This lens with a 1.4x (i.e. 420mm f/5.6) to my surprise, is actually as sharp as the EF-400L prime and well exceed my 100-400L IS USM in resolution - http://www.stevesforums.com/forums/v...549732#p549732
