You're probably going to end up having to purchase two lenses as it is rare to find a lense which offers good wide-angle as well as telephone shots.

Most telephoto lenses start out at around 70 or 80mm, which in my opinion isn't nearly wide enough. My kit lense is 18mm and that is alright but in the future I'm looking to purchase a wide-angle lense as wide as 10mm.

After doing some research for the past few weeks, I've come to the conclusion that the Canon 70-300mm f4/5.6 IS USM lense is an excellent buy (roughly $550). You may also want to look into the Sigma 80-400mm but that raises the price another couple hundred bucks.

Let us know how wide you think wide is and how much you want to zoom.

i was looking at the 28-200mm F3.5-5.6 or the 28-300mm F3.5-6.3 but i also like the 24-135mm F2.8-4.5 sigma lenses and not really for any certain type just something to walk around with and i'd like to keep it under $400.

The quality of the Sigma EX lenses is excellent.
The quality of Sigma's normal non EX line is mediocre.

Same as the difference between the Canon L's and thier standard consumer lenses.

Lot of people have really liked the Sigma 50-500 AKA "The Bigma".

Unfortuantely there is no getting around the cost, if you want high quality and good performance it will be expensive no matter which brand you choose.
