NHL,

Thanks for your answer, yes I know you're a technical guy (and well respected coz of that) - that's why I decided to try to pick your brain.

I remembering seeing the 2 swimming lane photos (taken with 2 different telezoom lenses) and noticing the difference between the blur, but maybe I need to look closer if exif info is included. You gave some helpful comments there too.

Your extra remarks about compression, perspective and isolation were useful too, I realise those features come into play. Not JUST the numbers of a dof calculator!

Thanks again, I'll try to look into it...

If you have any examples (or links) how a Sigma 100 - 300mm at f4 looks in subject isolation, I'd be very grateful.

I appreciate everybody's responses. I guess the choices now would be between the Sigma 100-300 f/4 EX HSM or the Canon 70-200 f/4 L

The difference is roughly around $300..I just need to figure out if that money is worth the additional reach.

To be completely honest, I haven't even bought the camera yet (30D) and I'll only have one other lens in my bag, which is most likely going to the be Canon 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM

Choices...sheesh!!

Okay..so I've taken the plunge. Ordered everything today, 30D, Canon 28-135 3.5-5.6 IS USM and the Sigma 100-300 f/4 DG EX HSM

We'll see how it goes!! Thanks again for all the input everybody.

I got the 100-300F4 EX Sigma this week and have only gone out once with it but so far it seems like a great lens, quite a bit heavier than any of my other lenses but nothing that cant be gotten use too.

Good Luck with your recent purchase.
