The S5 has a 58mm front-filter thread (so a 52mm will be too small) - Do not use your 52 "entension tube"
-> Just use the 58mm adapter that come with the holder (in the link that I provided from B+H) directly on the S5 lens

Hi
I'm confused, there is no filter thread on the S5 without an adapter? My adapter is 52mm because this is the size I used on my 35mm film camera and I use its filters I realize the canon adapter is 58mm
What I can't tell from the sketches is whether the adapter ring screws in like my filters and then extends diameter wise so the holder can slip over it .
I'm beginning to wonder if it's got to do with teaching an old dog new tricks

Exactly!

1. The 58mm adapter ring screws on the front of the S5
2. Slip the Cokin filter holder out from the old 52mm adapter
3. Slip the filter holder on the new S5/58mm new filter adapter

-> You can keep the 52mm adapter on your 35mm film camera (or save it for another camera later) and just move the Cokin filter holder from one camera to the next...
