I was thinking about buying a used 500 F4 or I could get a spotting scope and camera adapter. I plan to take pictures of birds and animals.

It is like Ferrari vs. honda civic.

If all you want is a picture to say you captured the bird, then scope is OK but if you want nice photos to print big, then you want the big guns. There is a reason, you pay $5500 for the 500 f4 IS.
