i have a 350D+grip, just got a 50mm F1.8, and its brill! done a few tests, compareing it to my sigma 18-50 EX lens and at 50mm ( ish) at f2.8, 4 and 5.6 the canon is sharper and a bit cleaner all round!, iso =100, hand held(bah) but shot for shot, the canon is better, am i expecting to MUCH from a zoom? or do i have a bad sample?

thank you!

Probably a bad copy...

At least @ wide open the MTF's on the Sigma looks a lot better than the Canon's:

Sigma's Canon's

... At f/8 (blue curves) the 50mm does improve, but then Sigma doesn't plot when stoped down (f/8 )

Contrast will also play a role. Try some test shots outdoors (if you haven't already). I think the ef 50 will have less contrast wide open.
