Does anyone have any experience on if the Sigma 18-200 is better (in the 18-55mm range), than the Canon 18-55mm kit lens? i.e. sharper, less distortion.

I'd go out on a limb, without even taking a look at the specs for the Sigma, and say that the Sigma is better.

Your 18-55mm kit lens is your most basic lens; most any lens will have better glass and performance.

I had the Sigma 18-125mm and it was much better. My copy would evenkeep witha Canon 17-40mm L lens. It was a great lens, wish I never sold it. The 18-200mm should be about the same as they are very similar.

I would do some testing with it if you get one. At the long end it will be a bit soft though.
