Just receive this lens for my 20D. Took some test shots and noticed I had a hard time focusing on what I want to focus on.

I have the AF Point set to the center point only. This happens to me with my Canon 18-55mm and Sigma 28-300mm but not as bad as this Canon50mm. What am I doing wrong? :? Should I back up a bit?:? Thanks!

What do you think is wrong with this lens?
(beside the shallow DOF @ close distance)

-> The camera AF will have difficulty in low-light

-> Back up will increase the DOF

Since I have the centerAF Pointer selected I though the lens will focus onlyon whateveris centeredon the lens. Somepics the lens isn't focused on the center of the image.

Which ones are you worried about?

Most of them seem fine to me considering the shutter speed you are using.

Often 1/13 or 1/25 or 1/50 handheld?

Your lack of sharpness here is a combination of:

1.camera shake (mostly)

2.shallow DOF which you are not used to

3. the simple fact that the lens isn't really that sharp at very wide apertures

You should start with a shutter speed of 1/125 and work downwards from there dependingon how steady your hand is.Don't be afraid to push to ISO3200 if you need to.

Thanks peripatetic! I forget I have 3200 ISO :-) I do have shaky hands :-( I took a few more pics and I think I've got it. The soda can was only an inch from her face and I love how fuzzy her face is! This is a very cool lens! :-)
