hi guys, I am buying the 350D plus one ofthese lenses THIS WEEK as I have received a 10% discount voucher expiring end of July.

It has to be one of these two lenses as I need a walkabout lens for backpacker-travelling.

problem....i don't have lots of money. If I buy the Canon lens, I am gonna be eating very little next month!

Is it worth the sacrifice, or will the cheaper Sigma 18-200 do for a amateur near novice such as myself? Will the Canon lens be much much better, photo-quality-wise?

I've owned both of these lenses, and the Canon is optically superior to the Sigma. But most importantly, the Canon's IS will allow you to get low-light photos where the Sigma wouldn't dare. The IS makes a nice substitute for a tripod in some situations, which makes it a perfect travel lens.

I guess if I could only affordone lens I would lean toward the Sigma. Mainly because of the 18-200 range. It is a slow lens ( I do have one). My experience is that it is not as sharp as I would like it to be but for snapshots it is a very good lens. Your call though, if you need something beyond 85mm then the Sigma is it. If you shoot indoors alot without flash the Canon would serve you best.

Actually if one compromise on the range (i.e. not a 1:10 zoom) then the Sigma 18-125 is an excellent buy - It tops the EF 17-85 in every optical measurement results:

-> The only down side is you need to rest the camera down when the shutter is too slow since it does not have IS which you need to anyway for nightscape or moonlight pictures...
