Doing a lot of reading, and I hear a lot of folks recommend this 50mm lens.

What are it's strengths? What is it good for?

it has two good strengths, it's fast and its cheap. You won't find any other f/1.8 lens for under $80

Regardless, it's still a waste of money if you don't find the focal length useful. The focal length on an aps-c sensor makes it more suitable for portrait photography or semi tele photography. IMO, i think this is a little too long to take into most indoor areas.

For the money spent, it's the best deal in lenses! Sharper than almost every zoom, faster too! And it's the perfect range for portraits on an APS-sized sensor DSLR. I shoot portraits with mine in a 12x12 room all the time (a lot of concerts are "indoors" too).

I'm with Kalypso - it's a fabulous lens for portraits - especially low light.

Having said that - I'm not a fan of buying equipment just to own it - I prefer to buy equipment because if fills a certain need I have. After all, $70 is still a lot of money to spend on a paper weight.

I personally don't think it's a very good paperweight. It's too light. :blah:
