Wish I could give you first hand experience, only have second experience. Friend bought one for our trip to Maui to photo whales. Had very good results. Price was $179. Probably right in line with prices of Tamron and Sigma. You might want to check http://www.photo.net/learn/nature/x-300. This is not to discourage you from the Tamron or Sigma. They produce some excellent lenses and I have several by them. In this price range I would lean toward the Canon. Just keep in mind that this is a low end lens but from what I have seen it does produce good results. Probably have some readers that have some comparison data.
