ditto on this AiAF is a joke switch it off. I also find sharpness issues sometimes

Regarding the "softness" issue, the digital photography and

I agree that using AiAF, A70 may be tricked into focusing
on other areas than intended. Using only the center rectangle
for focusing I have excellent results.

Great, Skytruck!

That explained a lot of the "softness" discussion for me!

(It's probably the same reason, why many people think the G2 produces sharper pictures than the G3).

Treat the "auto" dial setting like poison and your sharpness will improve. Using center weighted focusing will also help quite a bit.
