The Engadget site just released photos of Sony's new Cybershot line, including the H9 with 8MP, 15X zoom, and a 3" tilt screen. With the H9 and Olympus 550, it seems the long zoom market is getting more interesting.

Surely Canon won't let this slide too long without an announcement.

There seems to be no continuation of the S3, otherwise the S4 would have been announced together with the other new models today. Instead Canon released the TX1 which has less zoom and the lens is also slower. What a disappointment!

The TX1 is an entirely new device for Canon, it isn't in the S3IS family but rather a hybrid media camera like the Sanyo HD2. Have a little patience as Canon always saves a few surprises for the actual PMA show. You'll know soon enough

Steve,

I hope you get a chance to review the Canon TX1. The numbers look good to me. I really like these small hybird cameras. How they actually handle is important.

Canon's TX1 is an awkward design! The lens should have been non- protruding, Kodak did it in a very slim cam. And the video codeccould have been Mpeg4. This product could possibly be a winner if the concept is thoroughly thought of.

Well I guess Canon designers knew this, but they just don't want competition in their our Camcorders.

From TX1 spec,

THe max aperture f/3.5 (W) - f/5.6 (T) comon...can we have at least 2.8?

and its flash range is kinda weak.

i guess we can't have anything:?

The lens retracts into the body. For more details, visit this website:

http://news.soit.com.cn/mulpic-42201-1.html

You can view some sample pics (8) and clips (4) at this link:

http://cweb.canon.jp/camera/powershot/tx1sp/index_f.html

When you visit the site click on 'SKIP' to avoid the advertisement and go straight to the good stuff. Then click on 'SAMPLE GALLERY' in the lower right corner to view the sample pics and clips (HDTV). They are shown in flash so the actual clips and pics will be even sharper (without as much artifacts) than those prepared for the web (which are not originals as it's flash based).
