My poor camera decided it wanted to act like I forgot to install batteries

After 2 1/2 years, and many thousands of respectable quality photos, my little S1 is comatose. I've tried batteries, cleaned contacts, different CF cards . . . all to no avail. (Though, I don't have an AC adapter to try, and am averse to trying a generic unit as I'm not sure of polarity [center positive, or center ground]).

Has anyone experienced this malady? If so, how was the concern resolved?

I was hoping this problem was, at least, somewhat common. I'd hate to pay a gazillion dollars for some repair tech's education.

Should I ship my camera to Canon, or try one of my local, authorized repair facilities? At least one of the latter offers free diagnosis and estimates. Seems like $30 in shipping versus $5 in gasoline.

Any suggestions or realtive anecdotes would be appreciated.

P.S. I just ordered a new S3 for my stepson. I hope it lasts a good long time

I would try replacing the memory battery first, next to the main batteries is a lithium coinbattery, typeCR1220, it'sin a pull-out plastic holder. When you replace it be sure the negative side is facing up (away) from the plastic holder. Hopefully this will revive your camera.

Thanks for the advice, Steve. I popped the batt out and stuck a voltmeter across it . . . reads 2.97V No way to load test, though. I wiped it clean (not that it looked dirty) and stuck it back in.

Still "tango uniform". I'll grab a new one on the way home, tomorrow. Let you know the outcome.

Update: I tried a new mem bat . . . no change.

I left it at Camtronics in Columbus, this morning. They offer free diagnosis and estimates. Waiting for the dreaded phone call . . .
