i had a canon powershot A620 and the video not only looked good - it took some of the best video in low light that i've seen. i gave the camera away, and now am regretting it as my other camera is much bigger and i hate lugging my camcorder around.

does anyone here know if the A640 or A710 are as good as the A620when shooting video in low light? i can't find a new A620 any longer but would like something with similar features and controls - so A series - as well assimilarlysuccessfullow light video.

thanks!

The video quality of all Digic II cameras is more or less the same. Perhaps there is a slight adavantage for models with a larger 1/1.8" sensor like the A610-A640. Digic III cameras like the G7 or A570 may even have slightly better video quality.

Image stabilization improves the quality of video than it does for still shots - you might also take that into consideration looking at those 2 cameras.

OK then, don't need image stabilization....

Then I think I might go with a A640. I have an A710 and all videos do seem have a noticeable mechancial hum/whir noise in the soundtrack... much like that people have complained about the S3... here's one example:
