Introduction:
To help out a friend, yesterday (09/07), I began to write a Canon S-5IS Flash Tutorial. As an instructor, I always enjoy writing and helping fellow photographers out. This tutorial will be posted in segments. It is designed to help those folks who are attempting to decide what external flash to use on that lovely hot shoe that Canon built into the S-5IS camera design. Then the tutorial will also move forward even further by discussing how to better use an external flash unit that both tilts and swivels, such as the Canon EX-430 flash, and others. so, it will be both about the external flashes available for the Canon S-5IS and how to make use of them.

Purpose:
This is not intended to be the "final word" or a definitive piece at all, on the flashes for the Canon S-5IS or the best techniques for using those external flashes. Instead this is BOTH a tutorial (a learning assist) and a springboard to further discussion on the external flashes available for the Canon S-5IS camera and how they can be used. So please jump right into the discussion. All are welcome, and together with some real collaborative effort, by everyone, we can probably learn a bit more about the Canon S-5IS and the external flashes that it can use.

My Background:
I am sure that many of you have seen me before in this forum, if not this folder. I add many posts to this Forum. I am a professional photographer and an instructor. I have taught photography for the last 12 years for various state universities, our local Community College, and along with my husband, we also conduct workshops on cruise ships all over the world. Yes, I can offer experience and I really like to teach. However, please bear in mind that I do not profess to know it all. Instead, in many instances, I might have to go to other sources to get a truly definitive answer for you. So please, view this as a joint or common discussion, where we are all here to learn a bit more about photography together.

I will proof read the eight pages I have written thus far, and then print them out and photograph them so I can begin to post them one at a time. I really do not desire to handle any PM's regarding this Canon S-5IS Flash Tutorial. So if you PM me regarding this thread, please know in advance that this is an open discussion for everyone and I will not answer any PM's about this thread. That way it is open to every one. It is 0500 or 5:00am here so It will be a couple of hours before I can proof read and photograph those first pages already written. To all, have a great weekend.

Sarah Joyce

P.S. Yes, I prefer to be called just Sarah, rather than my "handle," which is "mtclimber." At age 72, it has been a few years since I really tackled any mountains. My husband, of almost 50 years (our anniversary is later this month) always used to climb those mountains with me and he is now handicapped and using a scooter, so the nomenclature "mtclimber" is nothing anymore but merely a "handle." Thanks for understanding.
