I have never tried to plug in my camera to the pc because I use a built in card reader. Windows XP should have this driver built in though. I would turn the computer off, plug in the camera and turn it on, then boot up the pc and see if Windows will install the driver on it's own.

Did you install Canon's Zoom Browser Software?

I don't think most newer Canon models will allow you to transfer images from a USB attached camera without using Zoom Browser (Canon users please correct me if this is not right).

So, if you don't want to use Canon's software, I'd buy a card reader.

I have a whole slew of Canon cameras, including the S3is. With XP all I need to do is plug it in via USB, the computer does its thing (small yellow bubble comes up notifying me that a new device has been found and then later is ready for use). I never installed any drivers. I can access the cameras just like any external drive...
