I second this. You might eventually find that the reach of the onboard flash is not adequate. One nice feature of the S5 is the hot shoe for an external flash.

The 430EX makes a very nice additional.

By the way, re your comment on DSLR.

I did the switch - my daughter is now the proud and happy user of an S5 - and I am the happy user of a Canon 400D with my 17-70mm and 28-300mm lenses. There are just some things the DSLR can do that the S5 could not.

But learn from the S5. Then your needs will tell you later if you need to move to a DSLR or not. The S5 is a very capable cam.

i just got back from the state of vermont for a couple of days skiing.
