I'm completely new to the DSLR scene and have purchased a 450D EOS to learn my craft. It came with the stock 18-55 lens.

I'm wanting to get some zoom shoots and have a modest budget. I've been recommended both the Sigma and Tamron 70-300mm lenses for my Canon but wondered if there was any other lens that people here would recommend.

In the UK the Tamron runs at £160 and the Sigma is £100, however the local store told me the Tamron was optically superior. In all truth they're the worst most unfriendly camera shop i've ever been into and in my hope of supporting a local independent I'm finding it very difficult to keep going in there, especially after he tried to force me down the Olympus E-520 route a few weeks ago.

I guess i feel slightly on the back step because its all so new to me and i have very little understanding of it all.

Another option is the Canon 55-250mm IS lens.

It's equivalent quality to your kit lens.

The 55-250 has image stabilization.

Here's some sample shots on PBASE:

The Canon 55-250 can be bought online here in the US for about $240, not
sure how much in british pounds.

Hi, Please don't think I'm being funny, but I think you'd get better response on the DSLR board, rather than than theP&S. ... Jack
