Default Canaon S50 RAW results

I recently purchased the S50. I've used it for several images in RAW format, but when I viewed the images on my computer, all of the RAW images come out completely grainy. This is my first camera with the RAW option and I was wondering if this is normal? If not, what might I be doing wrong or is the camera possibly defective?

are you using the canon raw converter to look at your images? probably not. if your using baseline imaging readers like acdsee or the default one in XP you are looking at a rroughly 288x288 tiff thumbnail produced for review purposes only. you get a better view using thr canon file viewer included with your camera. slow but it works. after that there are other viewer/converters available that are better performing.

I've been using the included software of "FileViewerUtility" and "Zoom Browser EX". Not sure if that would provided a decent image. I have Photoshop 7.0. but as I found out the hard way, it doesn't work with my RAW images. I know it converts to a tiff in Zoom, but I thought Fileviewer was in native format. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
