This is one thing I don't like about a lot of smaller cameras, they miss focus in certain situations. My SX1 does it more than other cameras, but my Panasonic TZ5 suffers too. I'm spoiled using my dSLRs as they rarely get it wrong, but still it is something we have to live with. There are things we can do to make it less likely, such as ensure that we choose an area with good contrast to focus on, but still they will miss from time to time. Something moving fast really makes the AF struggle as it is having to use changing aspects of the scene to focus on. You might be better playing around with manual focus, I've found this to be pretty good on the SX1 in a lot of situations.

Thanks Mark,
It's starting to make sense to me.
There's an airshow happening on Sunday so armed with your advice, I'll go practice.

Did you try continuous AF, I've used it for shooting some video at a field hockey game, sometimes it tracks fine sometimes not.... it's worth a bash as well.

Oh, regarding the airshow..... you are very fortunate and I won't say bad words about you as you are new but I've been dying to get to an air show for years and have not been free when a local one has been on!!! Oh well, you will have to do a great job to get some good photos for us to look at. When you do the please start a new thread in the Transport section further down the list here at Steve's as lots of us would love to see them.

Happy shooting.

Hmmm, I have both ... one better then the other :-)

For the price SX1 is an excellent camera ... 4xAA, tiltable display, fullHD ... small, 20x zoom (optical till 80x)

Also fullHD videos are okay!

I bought Canon 550D because having of a lot of lenses - Canon 18-55 is my FIRST Canon lens :-) ... I thought for € 80 more ... with IS ... and it is not bad!
