Default A80 accessories? Lens info

I am wondering about how the optics of the add-on
telephoto leans affect the pictures (I just ordered one).
It is rated at 2.4x so is this 2.4x the already 3x you can
get on the A80 (total 7.2x) or is it additive (5.4x)?

Also, When taking a shot toward the sun (sun not
in picture but was about 30 degrees on horizon
so some glare in lens), I got a purple haze streak across
the picture, presumably lens refraction of light. is
this normal when pointing in direction of sun?

Any time you add glass the picture will loose a little quality. Any teleconverter will cause a little loss in quality. The canon is a very good lens though so it shouldn't be that bad. I think that you may have ordered the wrong lens though. The a80 calls for the tc-dc52a which is a 1.75x lens. the tc-dc52 (the 2.4x one) is for the a70 and previous a series cameras. My guess is the only problem you might encounter is vinyetting (or less of the zoom range is usable). I would be interested to hear how it works on an a80. Please post and tell us how it works.
Fyi I get that streak too any time I point the camera directlly at a bright light source like a light bulb (on my a40 and a70).

Officially Canon say A80 should use the new 1.75x TC-DC52A lens convertor but I found that the old A70 convertor works equally well as long as you can slip in some stepping rings to maintain the correct distance between the camera and the 2.4x lens. I even found that the nikon WC-E63 wide angle lens works very well for A80!!
