Default Shooting through screen

I'm trying to take photos of the birds at the bird feeders through the screen in our window using my SX1.

The camera would auto focus very well on the subject then jump to focus only on the screen, which comes out crystal clear btw

My question is this....

How can I set up the camera to auto focus through the screen? It takes too long to manually focus to get these birds, so by the time I have it focused it has moved or flown away.

Thanks for any advice!

Try moving the camera closer to the screen.

If the weather's not a factor, remove the screen while you shoot, then replace it.

Shooting through a screen is, at best, going to give you soft, poorly focused pictures. Putting a screen or nylon hosiery over the lens is an old trick to get nice soft portraits. My experience with digital cameras has been that the way the interpolation works, the screen or hose becomes visible as a grid.
If you can't find another way to do this, try to use manual focus, if your camera allows. If not, you should be able to lock in focus and exposure with a half-press of the shutter.

Thanks for your ideas folks

Too bad they haven't added the ability for digital cameras to ignore the screen pattern while focusing.

It doesn't seem to me that it would be that hard to do as most all screens have a basic pattern of squares...rarely are they rectangles. If they were to add an algorithm that ignores the pattern, taking into account that screens are going to be focused closer to the camera and thereby easier to add to the algorithm, I think it would be a selling point.

Cheers!
