Default SD sizes for my two Canons

Can somebody please tell me the maximum SD card sizes I can use with my Canon PowerShot SD630 and my Canon PowerShot S2IS? Thanks

2GB is no problem but I'm thinking of using 4GB or 8GB. The owners manual is no help. Has anybody used these sizes with either of these cameras?

I asked Canon via e-mail and was advised that 2GB is the largest SD card recommended for these cameras. They also mentioned that they cannot test all non current models regarding this issue. I expected this answer which is why I asked if anyone out there has experimented with 4GB or 8GB SD cards. Something larger than 2GB would be very handy for videos.

Here is a link to the reviews and spec of each of these cameras. http://www.steves-digicams.com/camera-reviews/canon/ I tried a 4 gig card in my old SD 600 and it wouldn't work.

Yep, I read them for both cameras. Steve only mentioned that he used a 2GB SD card. I guess I was hoping that because 4 and 8GB cards were available or soon to be available that Canon would have engineered these cameras with a view for the future. Future proofing in other words. Maybe they did. That's why I was wondering if anyone has tried a larger than 2GB SD card in either of these cameras, as bhammitt did with his SD600.

I believe the S5 is the first camera that could take the SDHC cards, which is basically anything over 2 GB. However it was my understanding that SDHC cards will work in anything that can take a SD card, but you'll be limited to 2GB no matter what the SDGC capacity is. Only thing I can think of is that you may have to format the card in the camera.

That is incorrect. SDHC cards (i.e,. the SD 2.0 specification) will not work in devices designed to the SD 1.0 or SD 1.1 specifications. They use a different type of addressing, and it's not just a file system issue.

Unless a device has been specifically designed to support SDHC cards, they won't work in it. You'll also see compatibility issues with many card readers (because they were designed to the older SD 1.0 or 1.1 specifications).

Now, you can use SD cards in a device designed to work with SDHC cards (the newer SD 2.0 specification is designed to allow devices to be backwards compatible and able to address the older card types). But, not the other way around.
