Default A70 vs A80 video resolution

The new A80 sounds great, but I can't believe that for $100 more the max video resolution is LESS than the A80's predecessor!

Now having never seen a 320x200 and a 640x480 video side by side, I'm wondering how noticible this difference is. Feedback please??

TIA,
Chris

It's quite noticable. When you watch a video made with the camera on TV, 640x480 looks almost as sharp as VHS except that it's not that smooth since it's only 15 fps. 320x240 looks blurry. I have no idea why Canon decided to go without the VGA video mode in the A80. I guess, it's because, just like many people say, they buy digital cameras for taking still images, leaving taking videos to camcorders. As I don't have one and anyway don't feel like carrying it with me all the time, high resolution video mode in my digicam is important for me. And it can do a pretty good job, I can tell you. Check this post for some good examples: http://www.stevesforums.com/phpBB2/v...ic.php?t=16663

It has to do with the size of the CCD. I have not heard of any camera manufacturer that has 640X480 on a 4mp camera. When you do the math it does not work out to implement 640X480.

You can't get 640x480 by simple division of the 2048x1536 sensor either. I've not noticed any cropping when using the 640x480 video or still image modes, what probably means that the camera uses all the 2048x1536 pixels to take the raw image and then the DIGIC processor converts it to 640x480. But what makes the difference with 4MP sensors, I think, is that they load the processor with more information, and I'd assume that it's just not fast enough to work out 640x480 video at 15 fps. Not sure it's true, just a thought.

Unfortunately the A80 videos are one quarter the size of the A70's best mode
