Default question about cropping pictures

I have been lurking here for a few days and have read that although you can print a decent picture with a lower megapixel camera, you will have problems when you go to crop. I have just bought an A80 and I have photoshop 6.0 both of which I have not used very much yet. I am trying to acertain why resolution/quality depreciates when you crop an image as many people have noted in their posts. Is it because when the image is cropped, the cropped image is "expanded" to the original size of the image? Or is it something else altogether? Any help with this matter will be most appreciated.

When you crop an image, its resolution decreases, and this effects the print quality:
