Default Canon G11 Firmware update with CHDK

Any of you is using the CHDK firmware update?
Can it be reversed easily?

Does it offer big advantages?

I wait for you comments. I own a G11 and I'm not sure if going with the CHDK or not.

Thanks in advance.

Regards,

Eugenio

give it a go and see if you like it, it's not a real firmware update/upgrade, you just make a 'boot disk' for your camera, so the CHDK loads during the camera start up and gives you an additional menu with a long list of options, some of them are useful, some not so much, some don't work at all.
I tried to expand the shutter speed to 1/8000 sec and it did not work, but I might have done it the wrong way around . The two main things that were interesting for me were extended bracketing and motion sensor shooting, just need to find some time to play with it and a few scripts. CHDK is not a permanent firmware hack, when you switch or format a memory card it's gone and your camera goes back to it's normal behavior.
a better battery indicator is a nice touch.
unless you are looking for very specific things enabled by CHDK I'm not sure you will benefit from using it, but it doesn't harm your camera, so you can just check it out and decide for yourself. just don't forget to lock the SD card after installing CHDK on it, as damb as it sounds CHDK doesn't work with a card unlocked and you can still save your images onto a memory card.
cheers,
Alex

Dear Algold, thanks for your reply.

Did you try it on a G11?

What about optical zooming while recording video?

What do you mean with Motion sensor Shooting??? What is that feature?
What kind of scripts are you talking about? How and for what?

How much extended bracketing? (I have to learn a little bit more about photography techniques...)

I wait for your/other's feedback.

Regards,

Eugenio

Hi Eugenio,
I have installed CHDK on a spare 4GB SD card to play with, it's not too complicated, just read through the links below and follow the instructions:
http://lifehacker.com/#!387380/turn-...a-super+camera

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK_in_Brief

http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK

there are numerous scripts (a set of instructions) written in uBASIC, that you can load and run using CHDK, they give you other options, not directly enabled by CHDK, like time laps shooting, focus bracketing, exposure bracketing for HDR, motion detection/monitoring, scripts for shooting lightnings etc.
There is a forum dedicated to CHDK scripts:
http://chdk.setepontos.com/index.php/board,12.0.html

haven't looked into video scripts, I really don't use video option
Have fun with CHDK and your camera.
Alex
