Why would the S500 have more noise than the S400? I had the S400 but had to return it, the lens got stuck in the out position.

When makers do upgraded models of popular cameras, many times they use CCDs that are the same physical size as the last one. They simply shove more pixels into that same size, so the pixels are smaller, and many times will even use the same lens as the model that's being replaced. Smaller pixels cannot gather as much light as larger pixels, hence, why you will many times see a higher megapixel camera that cannot capture more detail than previous version, and even have more noise.
