Default S100 Macro Mode

Newbee question...

Camera Specs:

-Focus range standard/normal (W) 1.2" to infinity.

-Focus range Macro mode (W) 1.2" to 1.6'

If the camera will focus at 1.2" in either mode why use macro? Even though Canon Tech support couldn't answer the question there has to be a reason for Macro mode.

Can someone explain it to me?

I'm guessing that in "Auto" mode the camera will probably select "Macro" AF if it deems necessary- and If you're using PASM mode you might have to select Macro AF yourself to shoot really close.
Of course I may be wrong....
