Default Settings suggestion for planespotting with SX40HS

Hi all,
I'm a couple of days I'll be attending an event with the possibility of photographing aircraft, both static and moving.
Since I use my SX40HS in auto mode in 99% of the times, what are the settings I should adjust so I can take the best pictures?Light might be an issue to take in consideration, because the weather forescast is cloudy.
Thank You
