Default Canon G-16 Viewfinder

When I look at (not through) my Canon G-16 viewfinder I see a thin dark line running horizontally across the center. When I look through the viewfinder, that line appears as a little distortion across the the middle of the view. Is this supposed to be there, and what's the point of it?

I went back to Best Buy and did a little research. Both their Canon G16 and G1X have the line across the viewfinder view. The sales guy had no idea. I also wrote to Canon help but their reply was all about the LCD, I couldn't get them or their computer answerers to understand I was talking about the viewfinder.
