Default Canon G-16 Manual Focus

I tried to use manual focus when I want the background in focus and the foreground blurry, for example, shooting through foliage birds flying.

I find when I set manual focus to infinity and press the shutter halfway down, the focus lenght resets to whatever is nearest and I get clear foliage and blurry birds, exactly what I was trying to aviod.

Is there a better way to do what I want, which is not automatically focus on whatever is nearest, to keep the focus pinned at infinity?

For what it's worth, I figured the problem out. You have to turn off "safety manual focus" and then the manual focus will stay pinned to whatever focal length you've selected.
