the "shooting" button of my a70 ceased to work. sent it to canon for repair, warranty expired 3 days ago, i think i'll eat the charges hopefully not too much. i might have overused my a70 taking pics of our baby. tried everything from changing batt to CF mem, won't depress to take, all features seem working, except for that very impt button. will a digital camera like the a70 die after certain number of shots taken? never dropped or wet or mishandled it, just stopped working - stuck!

now i'm a little iffie to buy another canon. i hate to admit it, i should have bought the extended warranty offered, just missed the warranty cutoff by 3 days.

question is, is a80 a much better & RELIABLE camera?

is extended warranty $60 worth the investment?

should I wait for my a70 to be fixed? how much $$is reasonable to have it fixed or just replace it with a80 or a another brand.

i need your suggestions guys...pls help.

jvmajor2.

Where are you? In the UK the camera would be covered under the 'sale of goods act' which means that goods have to be fit for the porpose it was designed for a reasonable amount of time. If it's gone faulty only three days out of warranty I would be pushing Canon for a free repair.

This may not be the case where you are but I would still be pushing for a free repair as a good will gesture.

The 24 month extended warranty costs £62 in the UK (about US$100) so from my point of view you are getting a good deal at US$60.

Thanks for your input Mester, but a little too late. I already ordered the a80 thru newegg $334 + tax without the extended warranty. Kindda read from the message board here and found One opinion and stuck with it. I figure if it breaks down after a year then it's time to buy another but this time a different brand.

We need people like you.

Got my A80 for 3 weeks now...it seems I still like my A70. my wife says the video is not as sharp and a lot slower with the auto focus...are they true.?

unfortunately my a70 came back from canon unfixed for they won't honor an expired warranty---they'll charge me $105 to fix it...sucks, so that's why I have the a80 now.

i'm trying to open the a70 tonight but i got stock with a screw i couldn't find...i'm hoping it's just mechanical not the chip that controls the autofocus or something way out of my league.

any recommendation folks?????

oh A70 problem is the shutter button doesn't do anything when press....all buttons and knob seems to work fine.
