I am looking to purchase a brand new Digital SLR and I have reached a fork in the road. On the one side is the Canon EOS 10D with 7 area Multi-Point Auto Focus, 6.5 megapixel CMOS sensor, and the DIGIC processor; all coupled with the Canon EF 28-200mm lens.

On the other side is the Sony DSC-F828 with 5 area Multi-Point Auto Focus, 8 megapixel CMOS sensor, and the Real Imaging Processor (RGB+E), all coupled with the 28-200mm Carl Zeiss Vario Sonnar T lens.

Also, I allready have a professional MiniDV camera and am thus not interested in either the Canon EOS 10D nor the Sony DSC-F828 to deliver any kind of video or audio performance. What I want is the best still image that a digital SLR can take. Which of these two excellent cameras will deliver the highest quality still image possible? If there is another Digital SLR which will outperform these two, I would be glad to check it out so please let me know.

You didn't specify the price...
1. @ $7999 the 1Ds will outperform any camera
2. @ <$1K the F828 obviously will outperform the 10D with no lens!
3. @ $2K with a decent lens, the D10 will fare better, but then it should since it costs twice as much. To get the same range of lenses as a stand-alone F828 you have to spend more than that though, and live with the extra poundage.

... then there's the DOF, or the lack of it with faster lenses against the better macro capability with the smaller CCD vs the superior noise response from the larger sensor camera. What do you shoot and are you willing to carry all the photographic gears with you everywhere?

I intend to primarly take action shots such as pictures of AutoCross racing and Alpine Skiing. No, I don't have any problem with carrying more than one lens as long as the lenses and the camera all pack intoone, convenient, bag.

If it's for action shot then the F828 is out (although IMO the faster A2 is better features wise)... You might want to take a look at the Canon 1D mark-II, with a slighly lower resolution, it's quicker than the 1Ds, but cost about $3000 less.
You can then spend the differences on a couple of good lenses since either D's will need them!
