Default New G2--Basic, basic question

Hi everyone, I'm just beginning to learn how to use this cool new G2 that I've bought, and have a question that I couldn't find the answer to in the manual. When I turn it on or off, the lens extends or retracts, but it isn't one smooth motion. Instead, it extends most of the way then makes 2 or 3 little adjustments to its extension; when retracting as it's turned off, it makes the little adjustments first then fully retracts back to the camera face. Is that normal? Everything seems so much more complicated now that I'm holding my very own G2 than it did when I was just fooling with the store's display model! Oh, one more question--is it better to keep it in the mode that continuously focuses, or the mode that focuses only after the button is depressed halfway? Thanks, Arlene

Continuous focus will use up the battery quicker.

Thank you! Finding it hard to get time to play with the camera, but maybe this weekend. I think I will do the single-focus most of the time.

My Powershot A40 does the same thing but I have never thought much about it doing so.

My G2 does the same lens adjustments - don't worry about it.
