I purchased an S70 today and 1GB CF. The written documentation implies the S70 is limited to 512 MB CF. I don't want to open the CF package and try it in the S70 since I may have to return the 1GB CF. Has anyone tried a 1GB card in S70

As stated in my review, the S70 is FAT32 compatible, it can handle any size CF card or Microdrive. A 1GB CF is no problem.

On the bottom in the battery compartment is the Compact Flash Type II card slot. The S70 is supplied with a 32MB CF card and can use any Type I or II solid state flash memory card or one of the IBM Microdrives. The card is ejected far enough to be easily removed, even Microdrives. The S70 is FAT and FAT32 compatible and can be used with any size card or Microdrive.

I can confirm that a 1GB CF card works in the S60, which is essentially identical to the S70, except for the sensor.

As a side note, i did put a 1gb cf card in my antiquated powershot s10 and it seemed fine, though i can't remember if i tried shooting like that. As a general rule though as far as cf goes it is when you get to the limits of fat16 that you start to have problems. So up to 2gb should be more or less fine, though at that point it would be horribly inefficient. And apparently 127gb with fat32. This should hold up due to the controller being integrated into the card rather than camera. That is theoretical, it is entirely possible for a camera to go wonky anyway.
