One of the problems with digital P&S cameras is their very larget depth of focus (small sensor); this prevents the background blur which is so pleasing in pictures taken with digital slrs with their much larger sensors; fear not!! photoshop is here!!!

The lens blur filter in photoshop acheives this effect very well indeed; it requires a bit of work and care but the results are worth every minute you spend doing it; how to use the lens blur is explained in an article here:

I am attaching three pictures which show the difference after application of the filter; in each case the difference is obvious: the picture on the left is before the application of the filter
