Yeah, but you can only do that in "M" mode, right?

In any case, turning down the flash output is not always an option... you'll get a dark picture.

I just did a quick test. If you turn the flash intensity down to 1/3 it recycles much faster.

I was thinking about using the reduced-flash technique in conjuction with Canon's "HF-DC1" external slave flash as a way to get quicker shot-to-shot times while still having plenty of flash power. But as you say, this can only be done in Manual mode, which somewhat limits its usefulness.
