I have an S2 and a 1GB card, encountered the same Memory Card Error several times.

I think it is to do with switching from off toPlayback mode, and/or switching off from Playback mode. I have since then developed a habbit to always switch on to Record mode, and also switch off from Record mode.

When I did forget and got the Memory Card Error, I just had to switch off and on to Record mode, then off and on to Record mode again and the error would go away. No files were affected.

It works for my S2. Hope it works for you too.

Other than this nuisance, the S2 is a great camera!

I had sandisk (regular) 512MB. I got the error. My batteries were also about to die.

I tried the original card (16MB) that came with it and camera worked fine. So is this a card problem or a camera problem?

It is a camera problem when using cards of 512 MB and 1 GB.

No problem with 128 or 256 MB.

I recieveda reply !!!! from Canon Support :

"We recommendSanDisk because our testing is conducted using those cards, and the cards that we bundle with our products are made by SanDisk."

So, got a new SanDisk 1 GB card - a few days of trials... no problem ! tried it also with very low batteries warning - no problem ! (yet?)....

I have had the Sandisk Ultra II 1.0GB card for about 2 weeks in my S2. Today I got the dreaded error "Memory Card Error" "CARD LOCKED!". I attached the card directly to the USB connector, NOTHING. It is dead.

What a wonderful thing to happen, LOST SO MANY GREAT PHOTOS from a trip I had taken.

Sounds clearly like there is an issue with Canon S2 and MEMORY in general from what I have read.

CANON get on it!

Was my happiness premature ??? seems that the Card Error" can pop up any time...

So far, Canon denies problem .

As for your lost photos - I do not think that they are lost.

1) Try taking the card from the camera and putting it back in - a few times if necessary. Worked for me when had the Card Error.

2) As suggested previously, by another member on this forum - turning camera on and off via the Recording option (not the Viewing option). It also helps sometimes.

3) If nothing help - search the internet for a " Photo Rescue" program. There are some.

Here is a free program for lost files - claims that it is suitable also for memory cards. Did not try it but it has a good reviews.

Here is my S2IS "SD scorecard":
 • Sandisk UltraII plus (1gb) .......good [/*]
 • Sandisk UltraII (2gb)....memory card error [/*]
 • Adata High Speed (2gb)...........good [/*]
 • pq1 High Speed (2gb).....memory card error [/*]
I get the same error in my sd10 so if it is a camera problem, it's not limited to the S2.

As you can see from the above, paying more for Sandisk is no assurance the card will work, however, it might be easier to return. :-O

Formatting, boot sequence, etc, had no effect. The bad cards stayed bad.
