Default S30 as a webcam.. possible??

Hi everyone,

I hope to get my first digital on tuesday. My question is if I can use the S30 as a webcam? If yes, what should I use as the program? or any hardware, such as TV card or something else?? Thanks in advance..

Kagan,

My advice to you is spend $50 to $100 or the equivalent in your area on a dedicated webcam and forget about using your digital camera. This subject has been talked about more times than enough on this forum about using a digital camera as a webcam. True, some cameras can double as a webcam but most can't. You would have to use a video capture board and connect the camera to that and then there is the problem of the camera switching off after a couple of minutes. I don't know of any way you could get around that.

hmmm. Thanks for the answer. My new question it if I use the camera with an adapter, not with the batteries, can I overcome the swithing off problem? Of course I am assuming that I am able to use it as a webcam.

I've tried that and it doesn't work. The camera is set to switch off automatically with it's powersave function (Canon Powershot A40) unless you press one of the buttons such as the zoom rocker. If you want to do this every few minutes to prevent the camera from switching off then it probably will work.
