I have been looking at the S2 for a week now, and suddenly after 1/29/06 it became rare to find at popular stores and/ or no more discounts
Circuit City used to have a $50 discount until today. $499 Vs $449.
NewEgg raised their price as of 1/30/06: $446
Walmart: out of stock. (the Walmart "out of Stock" is a dead give away... because when Walmart orders something, it is usually by the 10's of thousands! Plus they removed the price of that item; which is an indication that it may not be sold anymore).
Something is up in the air: I think Canon is quietly tightening the supply for a possible replacement soon!
We will find out pretty soon, I hope!
(it would be nice if they improve on it - ie:2.5" LCD; X:15; 1/1.8" ccd, etc...)

If so (and it's not) why would the price go up?

Typical "after holidays" clearance. It was a really hot item for the holiday buying rush. Discounts or out of stock is a reaction to inventory levels. The unit is too good to just pull off the market this early in the product curve.

Happens every year - Canon XT's are not easy to find either.

I knew something is coming... Too many signs to discount!

S3 IS replaces S2 IS

At first glance it doesn't look there is much of an improvement!
Same old CCD: 1/2.5"
6 MP will deteriorate the picture resolution (with same size CCD)
Still using NiMH Batteries.
LCD monitor :115,000 pixels ... same o... same o.
etc...

The world of digital cameras will never stop.. it will always be growing, and there will always be a better camera on the way. Better technology, more features, people can go nuts trying to keep up with it all, upgrade at every chance and keep 'waiting' for the next to come.

I'll stick with my standard 2-3yr upgrade routine..lol.. I got what seems to be the best deal on my S2 (from new in store). When my yongest son is ready for kindergarden, I'll splurge on the latest 22mp, 50X ultrazoom that's less than 2" thick.

the price is probably going up so when the S3 is out, the price difference is so little that everyone is going to buy the S3 instead of the S2.... that's my guess!
